A real shame, because we used to be such a can do people. Noted and admired around the world for our innovative and creative thinking...and jury-rigging! But there are a few of us still out here...want to move to northern Arkansas? Up a mountain?
Praise be to G*D, the swelling is way down, and the ear canal even is opening up a little...the fever is gone and I can chew again! As far as getting the medicated eardrops in, sometimes using a wick of some kind inserted into the canal will help.

Nanc - more power to you in learning to take care of yourself. Believe me, I have seen the whole range of patients from hypochondriac types to diabetics with feet about to rot off (didn't come to the doctor for months for fear of losing the foot). The trick is to find the correct balance. People coming to the doctor all the time is only part of the rising cost of health care nowadays, but that is another topic for another day. And I have to say I do not take care of any farmers, nor have I in my career. Eight years in the Air Force (no farmers there) and 6 years in NJ (again, no farmers near where I live in suburban NYC sprawl) have deprived me of the pleasure. They have always struck me as the hardy, salt of the earth type of people.Dr. Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12761381841131597933noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4777924283137713200.post-63062356460192502462008-07-01T17:08:00.000-05:002008-07-01T17:08:00.000-05:00Mayo Clinic suggests using a 1:1 of white vinegar ...Mayo Clinic suggests using a 1:1 of white vinegar and alcohol to make sure you have flushed out your ears.
Mixed myself up a batch, with dropper...better prepared for the next time!

tmwThe Merry Widowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07931051881434050901noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4777924283137713200.post-22651556070670038592008-06-29T22:32:00.000-05:002008-06-29T22:32:00.000-05:00dr. john - we're not ones to rush to the doctor ev...dr. john - we're not ones to rush to the doctor every time somebody sneezes and know when the time is right. please don't blame us for the rising cost of health care.

if you rarely see farmers at your office, good chances are that they tend to their ailments with what they treat their livestock with - you have to figure that something that outweighs you by five times and lives through a treatment there must be something to it.

reference "dead doctors don't lie" and the calcium treatments.nanchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08809768490674110768noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4777924283137713200.post-66504477138021903752008-06-29T20:08:00.000-05:002008-06-29T20:08:00.000-05:00Dr. John-You're going to love this, I had that sto...Dr. John-You're going to love this, I had that stomach bug a week ago, a few hours later came down with otitus medea(sp?), fought both of them off and ended up with a really "good" case of swimmer's ear.
I called my doctor, and she prescribed Ofloxacin drops...so, see? Triple an...Very innovative and frugal, I must say. Triple antibiotic ointment has neomycin, bacitracin, and polymixin B, all relatively old antibiotics that still work well in combination in topical applications. Don't swallow it cause they don't get absorbed well from the intestine and therefore won't work "from the inside".

I am not sure what the pain reliever is (probably some kind of mild topical anesthetic like benzacaine) but I would advise against putting that in the eye. Such chemicals can actually impair healing of any lesions that may be on the cornea (the thin membrane that covers the colored part of your eye) such as abrasions and ulcerations which can masquerade as pink eye. Usually, though, the person will have a feeling like something is in his/her eye that they can't get out (a foreign body sensation in medical parlance) yet there is nothing visible in the eye. That should be seen and treated by a doctor or optometrist. Also, if you get irritation of the eye as well as a rash that looks and feels like shingles (groups of little blisters on red skin and a feeling of burning, shooting pain) on your forehead, don't f&*# around, get to an ER or an eye doctor pronto! A shingles infection in the eye that is not promptly and properly treated can screw up your eye like you don't want to know.Dr. Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12761381841131597933noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4777924283137713200.post-32141465536555880332008-06-25T14:54:00.000-05:002008-06-25T14:54:00.000-05:00Eyes-A cup of regular ammonia in a glass bowl left...Eyes-A cup of regular ammonia in a glass bowl left in a warm(but turned off)oven should loosen everything...
Use neosporin+ over swollen glands, or infected sinuses, or place an amount the size of a pea on the end of a q-tip and place gently inside an infected ear.
